Missionary Support

Our church helps support several Presbyterian missionaries as well as many other missionaries with whom we have established relationships. Support is in the form of direct funding and personal correspondence. We have aided one pastor in the Philippines for over 34 years and communicate with him often. The following are among those whom we help support:

Cynthia Easterday
Republic of South Africa

Cindy Easterday first went to Africa as a mission person in 1994 with African Enterprise (AE), a non-denominational evangelistic ministry with teams in ten countries across the continent. After short terms in South Africa and Malawi, she became a co-worker with PCUSA and was assigned as an assistant to Dr. Michael Cassidy, founder and international team leader of AE. In 2000, Cindy became more involved in HIV/AIDS in South Africa, particularly in the Church’s response to those infected and affected. In 2005, Cindy’s involvement with a local HIV/AIDS response ministry led to her desire to equip and encourage pastors and church leaders to respond “as Jesus would” to those in need.

Cindy began her current appointment in August 2005 with the Joining Hands (JH) network in Lesotho. From 1998 to July 2005, Cindy worked in neighboring South Africa with AI and Tabitha Ministries.

The name of the JH network in Lesotho is “Kopano ke Matla Toantsong ea Bofuma Lesotho,” which means “unity is strength in our fight against hunger.” It is comprised of churches, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community-based organizations (CBOs) from throughout Lesotho.

The network’s main purpose is to support dialogue and action among member organizations about the root causes of poverty and hunger. The network devises strategies to address hunger issues primarily through local government structures and encourages people to work together. They hope that successful initiatives on a local level will influence national policies and bring more social and economic justice to the people of Lesotho.

Joining Hands is not an aid or project-based program, but is based on a model of partnership, in this case a partnership between the Lesotho JH network and Los Ranchos Presbytery in Los Angeles, California. The relationship is grounded on mutual respect and mutual education. Both partners work to raise international awareness on issues of hunger, poverty, and justice.

Rev. Janet Guyer
PCUSA Regional AIDS Consultant
for Southern Africa

Many of you may remember Rev. Guyer from her visit to our church a few years ago, when she preached for us. Janet often tells an African proverb that says, “If you go alone you can go fast but if you go together you can go far.” Janet works with church leaders and church members in southern African countries, both of whom live day by day with the reality of AIDS. One of the questions generally pondered in meetings is this, ‘if we are in fact all children of the same God, what is our responsibility to our brothers and sisters in Africa who are living with the HIV virus and the tragedies it can cause?

How can we, as the PC(USA), travel with our partners in Southern Africa so that we can ‘go far’ in making a difference in people’s lives?’ Janet has worked for almost six years now with people she has come to care about very much, through a new perspective. She reports that,

“I wondered about how jaded I had become not to be overwhelmed by the poverty and the pain of the people we meet and those we see along the road. Then I realized that it is not a matter of being jaded or even being simply used to it, but that I have somehow learned to make my peace with it or otherwise, I would never be able to do my work. However, looking back over the years I realized that there are those individuals and instances when I am still blind-sided and deeply touched.”

This is a major challenge for our field mission workers who witness firsthand the continued struggle with AIDS. Your prayers for Janet’s mental strength are just important as for her physical strength. You can send a note of encouragement or prayer to Janet at: jguyer@pobox.com.

Jim & Jody McGill
Malawi

A Profile of Jim and Jodi McGill, Our Missionary Partners in Northern Malawi

Jim, an engineer, and his wife, Jodi, a nurse, have been Presbyterian mission (PCUSA) co-workers since 1995 in Malawi. Their most recent assignment is in Mzuzu which is the largest town in the northern region of Malawi, located just two hours from Embangweni, where they had lived for ten years. Jim and Jodi moved to Mzuzu in 2000 in order to widen the scope of their work. After their reappointment in June 2004, Jodi began working part-time at the Ekwendeni Hospital's nursing school as a clinical instructor.

Jim serves as Coordinator of Protected Water and as Buildings Coordinator. Jodi is now the Presbyterian Synod’s Coordinator for Primary Health Care, Interim Coordinator for the AIDS department, and also works part-time as a Nursing Clinical Instructor for the Ekwendeni College of Nursing. Jim coordinates the clean water and sanitation work of the Synod’s three hospitals, the clean water section of the Synod’s Development Department, and the shallow wells work of the Marion Medical Mission, for which Bob Koster volunteered in 2007. They have six adopted children.

The Stock Family, Missionaries to Pakistan and Albania

Fred and Margie Stock arrived in Karachi, Pakistan on October 1, 1956 after Fred received his Masters in Theology from Princeton Seminary. At Princeton, they applied to the United Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions to work as evangelistic missionaries, and Pakistan became their assignment. Pakistan suited them well and they served the Pakistani people for over 50 years –teaching, preaching, laughing, crying and living with them. Their 5 children were born in Pakistan and all became missionaries in various ways in the Far East. First Pres. has been a supporter and follower of their mission work for many of those years and in recent years, we have included two of their children and spouses (Paul and Pat Stock and David and Sara Treece) in our mission outreach. Their oldest son Dale passed away a few years ago but Dale’s wife Nicky and their son, Luke, continue the mission work in Pakistan. Fred and Margie have retired but are currently back on the mission field in Albania with another daughter, Ruth, and her husband Mark Stoscher.
Paul, Pat and Nicky remain in Pakistan following in their parents footsteps. Paul and Pat are outstanding teachers of the Word and of the ways of life. Paul is also a renowned musician and song writer of Christian songs in many languages. A famous Muslim singer who sang one evening for President Musharraf sings many of Paul’s songs. She once broke off in the middle of a song and said, “I can’t believe I am singing about God and not just about love. It is wonderful!” As she left she said to Paul, “Working with you is different. There is a light about you and I sense that light when I sing your songs.” Pray that she will continue to see that light. Pray for the safety of our friends in Pakistan in these perilous times after the assassination of Bhutto and during the elections. Pray also that the extremists will not win many seats in the elections so that moderate policies may persist.
David and Sara continue to seek guidance as to whether they should return to their former location after the Olympics or seek to work in another Central Asian country among the Uighur people. Thanks to the Lord for such wonderfully dedicated people!

Ministry to Hindu Tribal Peoples with Interserve USA

Paul & Pat work with the Church of Pakistan to evangelize and disciple Hindu tribal peoples in the southern province of Sindh. The tribal peoples are despised and considered "untouchables by the Muslims and caste Hindus. Many tribal people are being drawn to Jesus' teaching and have been baptized.
